White Horse Wood Country Park and the Kent Downs
White Horse Wood Country Park is a short drive from my house and is somewhere I really should visit more often! The park itself is one of the smaller Kent country parks, but is set within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so boasts some incredible views. For history lovers, the ruins of Thurnham Castle, built around the 12th century, as well as traces of an Iron Age settlement, can be found on the site.
The park is relatively new – the local authority purchased the site in 2000 – and work continues to develop it. Around 2,000 trees have been planted, grazing animals help maintain the grassland areas and it is hoped that, eventually, the area will become home to some unusual flora and fauna.
